Moving a 40-year-old building & civil construction giant into a paperless future
With a long and prestigious history in the oil and gas industry behind them, Decmil had a huge challenge for Insight: reinvent their business processes from the ground up. The central vision imagined a paperless future, which was dramatically streamlined and mobile across Decmil’s sites in many remote areas.
Insight worked with Decmil to help pioneer a number of transformational projects using the Microsoft platform to address problems of excessive paper use, courier charges, a geographically-dispersed workforce and compliance requirements.
A solution for every problem
Decmil’s first priority was to improve the 100% paper-based project controls. Insight helped them to develop a desktop app called Site Diary, for recording a job’s progress against budget and supervisor notes. Paul Premerl, Project Manager of the QGC Well Site at Decmil, was an instant convert to the new system. “Since the crew got tablets, productivity has increased because paperwork is submitted electronically,” he explains. “For example, I get materials information up to 24 hours quicker than before. This puts all of us in a far better position and places us at the forefront of innovation and transparency to which the client strives for.”
Next, Insight develop a bespoke Maps & Rules app for Decmil’s work with QGC. Maps & Rules was designed to significantly reduce the risk of Decmil’s employees breeching sensitive land access rules, which was a major leap forward in productivity.
As well as keeping employees up-to-date with the latest Land Access Rules (synced to the tablets via Azure Mobile Services, even in poor reception areas), the app helped guide employees through remote and often inhospitable areas using Bing Maps and displays that helped users find the strongest Telstra mobile reception.
Lastly, Insight helped eliminate almost 50 different forms with the Forms & Files app. This app works together with Maps & Rules, syncing the files and forms associated with each well site from Office 365 SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business and Azure SQL. It plays a key part in the quality control process, and saves considerable effort for filling Electrical and Mechanical Inspection and Test Reports.
"A pioneering solutions package generating multimillion dollar returns since introducing the Ignia [an Insight Company] developed Site Diary to assist supervisors manage projects, the app has saved Decmil over $3 million,” explains Jenni Campbell, Decmil’s Group Manager of Business Systems.
By reducing the scale of physical paperwork, courier costs, transport issues and remote access, Insight has shown that a business almost half a century old can operate at speeds and efficiencies comparable to the latest tech startups.
